The Curriculum – Early Years Foundation Stage

The early-years education we offer our children is based on the following principles:

•it builds on what our children already know and can do;
•it ensures that no child is excluded or disadvantaged;
•it offers a structure for learning that has a range of starting points, content that matches the needs of young children, and activities that provide opportunities for learning both indoors and outdoors;
•it provides a rich and stimulating environment.

It is the Early Years Foundation Stage principles grouped into the four themes of: A Unique Child, Positive Relationships, Enabling Environments and Learning and Development that guide the work that we do in the nursery. With the six areas of the early learning goals: Communication Language & Literacy, Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Personal, Social & Emotional Development, Creative Development, and Physical Development setting out what is expected of most children by the end of the Foundation Stage.

The Curriculum – Primary School

As the school follows the Primary National Curriculum, its educational requirements are those of the national curriculum, as set by the government. It follows the national curriculum for England (for 3-11 year olds) and also caters for a range of co-curricular activities such as drama, music, sports, martial art - all based on the Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSEHV) Programme, which complement the formal curriculum.

We teach the National Curriculum which consists of the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Information Communication Technology and Religious Education. The foundation subjects include History, Geography, Art, Design & Technology, Music, Physical Education, Personal, Social and Health Education. In addition we have Sathya Sai Education in Human Values daily.

The curriculum is defined as all the planned activities that promote learning and personal growth and development of the child. It includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also the range of extra-curricular activities that the school organises in order to enrich the experience of the children. Also included is the ‘hidden curriculum’, or what the children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave. We aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible individuals, who can work and co-operate with others while developing knowledge and skills, so that they achieve their true potential.

The Curriculum – Secondary School

As the school follows the National Curriculum, its educational requirements are those of the National Curriculum, as set by the Government. As for the primary curriculum the school follows the National Curriculum for England (for 11-16 year olds) and also caters for a range of cross-curricular activities of drama, music, sports martial art which are all integrated with the SSEHV Programme.

The National Curriculum consists of the statutory subjects that all pupils must study: Art and Design, Citizenship, Design and Technology, English, Geography, History, Information and Communication Technology, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, Physical Education and Science. The teaching of Careers Education, Sex Education and Religious Education is also statutory. This curriculum is reinforced and supplemented with the SSEHV Programme. SSEHV is taught daily too.

The ethos, climate of the school, and the SSEHV Programme support the fundamental aims of the Secondary National Curriculum. The curriculum enables all young people to become:

Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve.
Confident Individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.
Responsible Citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
